MyRevlimid | Patient Support iPhone App
MyRevlimid is a companion app for patients who have been prescribed a particular treatment schedule for multiple myeloma.
Problem:
Patients prescribed a lengthy schedule incorporating combined prescriptions find it difficult to take the correct medication throughout their treatment.
Objective:
Optimise the existing, paper-based patient support materials for a mobile app that makes treatment schedules easier for patients to adhere to accurately.
Primary Challenges:
- Creating a reminder system that adheres to the rules of two different medication schedules whilst allowing for flexibility in cases where doctors may modify patient prescriptions mid-treatment.
- Designing a simple setup process allowing patients to enter their prescription requirements to initiate a customised sequence of medication reminders - The process should also consider that patients in older age brackets may be less proficient with mobile devices.
Work Process & Initial Concepts:
I learned that the standard dosing schedule for Revlimid and Dexamethasone both occur within 28-day cycles. An individual cycle is defined as follows:
- Revlimid Days: 1-21, Rest Days: 22-28
- Dexamethasone Days: 1-4, 9-12 and 17-20. Thereafter, Days 1-4 for each remaining cycle.
I became familiar with how these sequences worked together by way of a graphical representation.
In order to represent the medication due each day, I first tried working within the familiar format of a monthly calendar. However, on certain days both medications required representation and the interface became very cluttered.
I continued by considered the hierarchy of information a patient would need to know each day: firstly the medication due on the current day and secondly, their place in the context of their greater treatment (the cycle and particular day of the cycle). Also of importance was the terminology used by doctors in communicating these cycles to their patients.
The final solution.
