My Year at Home

My Year at Home is a short documentary featuring artist Abbey Golden. Newly in the thick of motherhood and feeling creatively unmoored, Abbey finds unexpected inspiration in a painting by early 20th-century Expressionist Paula Modersohn-Becker. That encounter sparks a quiet but profound shift—from desolation to creative flow.

Abbey golden’s New Wave

This short is a natural extension of my portrait photography of visual artists, and represents my first foray into filmmaking. I shot on a Sony Alpha 7S-III and edited the film on Premiere Pro. I enjoy exploring the composition of shots within the dynamic space of film, finding a sense of story in the footage, and choreographing motion and sound.

Hypervigi-Lunch | A Quiet Encounter Between Two Squirrels

Hypervigi-Lunch finds two squirrels in a moment of mutual startle—delicate sensibilities flustered by an unexpected encounter on the grass. A presiding California Scrub-Jay sets the story in motion with the flutter of wings—like the turning of a page. How will the squirrels navigate this typically fraught lunchtime experience?

As an Australian, I didn’t grow up with squirrels. Their presence in surprising numbers in the streets and backyards of Los Angeles continues to feel novel, and the fascination doesn’t wear off. Their movements, temperaments, and constant vigilance have become both subject and symbol in my transition into filmmaking and editing in a new city. Their antics feel strangely human, naturally lending themselves to storytelling possibilities in the editing room. Their watchfulness mirrors my own—an alertness to the big dramas unfolding within their miniature world.

Original score by composer Michael Gordon Shapiro. The wing flutter was captured by me in the field, in quiet collaboration with a local scrub-jay.
